Gian Sanghera-Warren
Gian Sanghera-Warren (he/they) is an interdisciplinary dance artist and performer based in London.
Primarily working with movement, his work is informed by notions of communal memory, contemporary trends and digital archivism alongside tactile sensation and intimacy. Gian is continuously inspired by the detritus of the digital world as subject matter and methodology for creating transdisciplinary performance work rooted in an understanding of the body.
Gian has previously explored the use of machine learning software as an extension of the embodied archive and a choreographic tool, forming a practice that engages with digitial platforms to produce text and visuals that inform choreographic process and performance scores.
His current research investigates the impact of digital movement trends on choreographic practice, using a framework of semiotics to evaluate the role of expression within the virtual and physical body. Reframing doom-scrolling as a form of research, Gian analyses and reincorporates online movement trends into live and virtual performance scores, inspired by Baudrillard’s Simulacra and Simulation and Haraway and Hayles’ cyborg post-humanism.
Gian graduated from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in 2023 with a first class honours in Contemporary Dance (BA) as the recipient of the Simone Michelle award for Choreography. He then went on to study Interdisciplinary Dance Performance (MA) at Northern School of Contemporary Dance, where he recieved a distinction.
During his time at Laban, Gian performed works by artists such as Jean Abreu, Akeim Toussaint-Buck and Protima Chatterjee, as well as receiving training from the Daniel Squire, Ellen Van Schuylenburch, Heidi Rustgaard and Marina Collard. He also assisted and facilitated on several young people’s and community-based dance programs as part of the Learning and Participation Team, including the weekly CAT course.
During his Masters, he worked with artists including Fernanda Prata, Susan Sentler, Dan Canham and Gecko dance theatre and was also able to develop his independent practice and collective HEAVYWARE.
